This weekend Tri-City Storm had four teams travel down to Overland Park, Kansas to compete in the regional portion of the annual Presidents Cup. The tournament is designed to bring highly competitive teams together and so it was amazing to see the teams play so well.  Of the four teams that made the journey down to Kansas, two of them were playing on Sunday in a championship game.  The U16 Boys and the U17 Girls both went undefeated in their groups and earned top seeds for the championship games.  The U16 Boys team won their first game 2-1 and followed that up with 1-0 and 2-1 victories.  They came up against CE Black from Ohio in the championship game and ended up losing in an intense penalty shootout.  The U17 Girls breezed through their group with 7-2, 6-2, and 3-1 victories.  They battled Panathinaikos Academy from Missouri in the championship game and came out victorious with a 1-0 win.  The girls were the top scoring team in the tournament with 17 goals and were lead by Jenny Marsh who was the tournament’s top scorer with 5 goals.  This marks the first time that a team from North Dakota has won at the regional level and as a result the U17 Girls will now travel down to Auburndale, Florida to compete in the National President’s Cup on July 10th through the 14th.

While the Presidents Cup was going on Tri-City teams were also playing in the Walmart All-American Cup at the National Sports Center in Blaine.  The U14 Boys had a very successful weekend as they went undefeated throughout the entire tournament.  In group play they won 4-1, 2-1, 7-0 before beating Wayzata Soccer Club 3-0 in the semifinal.  In the final they came up against Minnesota Thunder Academy in an intense game.  It went into extra time tied at two goals a piece where the Storm scored the game winning goal and took the championship with a 3-2 victory.  After five games the U14 Boys had scored a remarkable 19 goals while conceding only four goals.

Overall it was a great weekend for Tri-City teams as many of them proved they can compete against high-level competition.  It was great to see so many teams have successful weekends and it is particularly impressive to see the U17 Girls moving on to Florida for the National Presidents Cup.  We will be rooting them on as they prepare to be the first ever team from North Dakota to get the opportunity to play in the national level of the tournament!  Good luck Storm!
